If you are on the road travelling no doubt you are already feeling the pinch of the fuel prices. Much the same if you’ve been planning, saving and budgeting to head off on your adventures and now wondering if you can actually afford it.
While we can’t do anything about the skyrocketing fuel prices, we’ve put together a few tips to try and help you save some money here and there to counteract the bowser bucks.
Consider a Diesel Vehicle
Diesels are more fuel efficient than petrol engines and they also emit less CO2, which makes them better for the environment. However, diesel engine vehicles cost more for the initial purchase and generally cost more to service than petrol engines. Another benefit of Diesels is they are able to produce considerably more torque (pulling power) than their petrol counterparts making them good engines for towing. Although there are lots of advantages of a diesel engine, you should consider all costs when comparing the fuel economy of vehicles.
Drive Slower
Cruising at around 90-95km/h in 100km/h or 110km/h zones will use less fuel than if you go faster. Keeping in mind current road and weather conditions of course. Also rethink using cruise control as it’s not very good for fuel consumption when towing. You also want to note your vehicle and caravan tyre pressure and make sure it’s at the recommended psi.
Use A Fuel App & Consider Price Locking
Download a fuel app on your phone so you can search up cheapest fuel near you. Don’t leave it till you’re empty so you have time to shop around and get the best deal.
You can also use the 7-Eleven app which has a handy fuel lock option so you can secure a price for 7 days.
If you’re shopping at Woolworths or Coles, keep your dockets and use the 4c off a litre at participating servos. Puma also offer RACQ card holders 4c off a litre as well.
Off-grid Camping
An area that you can save money while travelling is by being set up for off-grid camping. You’ll be able to find some secluded (and cheap or even free) camp spots and avoid expensive caravan parks.
Use apps like WikiCamps that lists thousands of sites as well as information on dump points, day stops, and water points (toilets, showers, taps).
